Essex County Cricket Club (Essex CCC) is looking forward to the 2016 NatWest T20 Blast after achieving a record number of online sales. This has been supported by its ecommerce ticketing and CRM platform, TALENT Sport, from Advanced Business Solutions (Advanced).

Since implementing the solution in November 2014, the club has seen a steady rise in online sales reaching an average of 66% by the end of the 2015 season. With tickets now available for the 2016 competition, sales for Club Members in the first week of priority were up by nearly 50% on 2015 and the first day of sales for ‘Over & Out!’ e-news subscribers saw an increase of £23,000 on the previous year. In total, online sales are up a staggering 250% on 2015.

The move to online has shown a significant improvement to last years’ ticket sales performance which saw the club’s telephone system crash under the weight of calls from fans wanting to purchase tickets. Over a year on from implementing the solution, Essex CCC has also seen improved customer service response times as the swing to online purchasing has reduced telephone demand.

Derek Bowden, Chief Executive of Essex County Cricket Club, said, “We have made great strides in developing our online service. Our fans are now able to purchase tickets reliably from any device at any time and the feedback has been excellent. The figures we have achieved so far indicates the success of the online fan experience in meeting the demand for tickets at these incredibly popular matches.”

Rowan Bangs, Membership and Ticketing Manager at Essex County Cricket Club, added, “TALENT Sport is a reliable, efficient solution which is now fulfilling its potential. The sales this year so far have proved our decision to drive supporters online was the right one despite scepticism that perhaps cricket fans were not ready to embrace this move. Fans are enjoying the intuitive online experience and the time efficiencies gained for the ticket office has had a positive effect of improving our in person or telephone response rates by at least 50%. We have an excellent relationship with the team at Advanced and the changes we have implemented have proved hugely successful.”

Mark Dewell, Managing Director of Advanced Business Solutions (Ticketing) commented, “The T20 Blast matches have stimulated fresh interest in the sport of cricket and clubs are having to adapt to meet the needs of the omni-channel fan, who want to get tickets early and expect a great online experience whilst purchasing. Essex CCC’s online ticketing success shows how they are responding to the demands of the connected fan and improving every way to engage with their supporters, whilst maximising the commercial opportunities of each and every fan.”

Hot on the heels of the success of its first venue in Thurrock, Essex, Jump Giants is opening a 30,000 square foot indoor trampoline park in West London in early May. Britain’s Got Talent stars Bars and Melody and Youth Creation will be bouncing in to perform at the VIP launch party.

Featuring over 100 wall-to-wall, green and purple inter-connected and angled trampolines that literally enable you to bounce off the walls, the Jump Giants park will feature a new Battle Beam Zone alongside its large jump arena, foam zone, dodgeball courts, tumble runs, basketball slam dunk lanes and dedicated junior giants area.

Fun-lovers and urban sports enthusiasts can stay tuned to Jump Giants’ Facebook, Twitter (@JumpGiants) and Instagram (jumpgiants) feeds for the chance to win one of a handful of VIP tickets to the launch party featuring Leondre Devries (Bars) and Charlie Lenehan (Melody). Other special guests may be announced nearer the launch date.

Co-owner at Jump Giants, Mark Gardner explains, “We’re expecting to attract urban sports fans, free-runners, kids and adults from across London and the South East of England. Trampoline parks are brilliant exercise and enormous fun.”

Once open, the Jump Giants Heathrow site will gradually roll out trampoline-based dodge ball leagues, fitness classes, birthday packages, family days, sessions for pre-school children, teen party nights, corporate team events and support session for jumpers with disabilities and special needs.

Recruitment is already underway, with the hunt for front of house staff, court monitors and party coordinators expected to create dozens of new jobs in the area.

Located on Old Bath Road in Colnbrook near Heathrow Airport, Jump Giants expects to open the doors at this location in early May. Bookings will be available at www.jumpgiants.com or 08444 141 141 around the same time.

Trampolining is a very efficient form of exercise. It has less impact stress on your joints than the equivalent in running for example, and also benefits heart strength, metabolism, metabolic rate and nutrient processing, the glandular system and fatigue, digestion, sleep patterns, nerve impulses and more.

The 20 highest earning football clubs in the world generated €6.6bn (£5bn) of revenue last season, an increase of 8% on the previous year, according to the 19th edition of the Football Money League from Deloitte, the business advisory firm.

Real Madrid top the Deloitte Football Money League for the eleventh year in a row, having generated €577m (£439m) in the 2014/15 season. Commercial revenue was the main driver of this growth, increasing by €22.7m from the previous season. Matchday income also saw an increase of €9.1m. Broadcast revenue, however, fell by €4.3m during the season.

Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, comments: “For the first time, the top three clubs in the Football Money League have all passed the €500m revenue mark. Real Madrid once again delivered a strong financial performance, buoyed by growth in their commercial revenue. The planned redevelopment of the Santiago Bernabéu will help to continue the growth in matchday income in the coming years.

“FC Barcelona’s on-pitch achievements in the 2014/15 season have translated to financial success. The European champions have climbed to second place at the expense of Manchester United, with revenue growth across all areas of the business – matchday, broadcast and commercial.”

Manchester United, although slipping one place to third, remain the highest revenue-generating club from the Premier League, earning €519.5m (£395.2m). Chelsea fell one place to eighth, with Arsenal climbing to seventh. Manchester City and Liverpool are the other two Premier League clubs in the top 10, placing sixth and ninth respectively.

Tim Bridge, Senior Manager at Deloitte, comments: “Despite a reduction in revenue year-on-year, the fact that Manchester United remain in the top three of the Money League demonstrates the underlying strength of the club’s business model. The return to Champions League football, as well as the commencement of a number of significant commercial partnerships, will only strengthen the business in 2015/16. With this in mind, it would not be surprising to see United top next year’s Money League for the first time in 12 years, with the club forecasting revenues of around £500m (around €650m).”

This year’s Football Money League has also seen movement amongst Europe’s football giants, with Bayern Munich falling from third to fifth place, their lowest position since 2006/07. The German champions were leapfrogged by Paris Saint-Germain, the only French team in the top 20, following another year of growth and a revenue of €480.8m (£365.8m). Despite a successful Champions League campaign for Juventus, and Roma’s jump from 24th to 16th, it has been a disappointing season for Italian clubs in revenue terms. Both Inter and AC Milan have slipped two places in the last year, with the former close to dropping out of the top 20 of the Money League for the first time.

Jones adds: “The 2014/15 Money League has been another year of growth for the ‘big five’ European leagues. However, we have also seen a slowdown of growth from the top five clubs, with revenues growing by just 4% year on year, compared to 11% in the previous edition. It may be hard for new clubs to break into the top 10 in the short term, given the €43.3m revenue gap between 10th and 11th place.”

A 10% strengthening of sterling versus the euro helped English clubs. A record nine Premier League clubs are ranked within this year’s top 20, one more than in last year’s edition. In their first appearance since 2005/06, West Ham United have once again joined the world’s revenue-generating elite, as revenues rose by £5.9m to £122.4m (€160.9m). Premier League clubs now dominate the top 30, with 17 of those clubs having played in the Premier League during the 2014/15 season.

Bridge adds: “Despite disappointing performances by Premier League clubs in recent European competitions, they continue to lead the way in revenue terms. With the new round of Premier League broadcast deals set to deliver greatly improved domestic broadcast revenues in 2016/17, we expect to see Premier League clubs cementing their places in the top 30 in the coming years, with potential for some of these to climb into the top 20.”

19 grants worth over £1.7million from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund (PL/FA:FF) have been awarded towards grassroots facility projects worth £3.5m between June and December 2015 across the whole of the South East.

Funding from the PL/FA:FF goes towards building new or refurbishing existing floodlit third generation (3G) football turf pitches (FTPs) and changing pavilions. The Fund also provides smaller grants for vital improvements, such as replacing unsafe goalposts and purchasing pitch maintenance equipment. (See Notes to Editors for a full list of the grants awarded in this period.)

This announcement of the latest round of funding follows the publication of the Government’s new Sport Strategy – Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation – which has seen the Premier League committing even more investment into the grassroots over the next three years.

The Premier League, The FA and the Government, via Sport England, have provided £102m between 2013 and 2016 towards the PL/FA:FF. The Football Foundation targets this investment into areas of greatest need and where it will have maximum effect. Last season facilities that the Football Foundation upgraded with the Fund’s investment recorded an average increase in football participation of 7%. Multi-sport participation (i.e. cricket; rugby; netball; etc.) also increased by an average of 8% at those same sites.

This funding includes a £342,265 grant to Communities First which will enable them to refurbish an existing FTP to form a new floodlit 3G FTP.

Tracey Crouch MP, Minister for Sport, said: “Improving grassroots football facilities is vital to help us get more people involved in the game and nurture our future football stars. This latest £14 million worth of investment, from the Premier League, FA and Government, will benefit community football across the country in locations that need it most.”

Richard Scudamore, Executive Chairman of the Premier League, said: “The Football Foundation’s underlying strategy of delivering quality community facilities where they are needed most and can be best utilised is something the Premier League has long-supported. Creating opportunities for young people to play football and get involved with other sports is incredibly important to developing a taste for sport and exercise and all the ancillary benefits that brings to life. It also forges stronger bonds between communities and the professional football clubs sustained by them.”

Martin Glenn, Chief Executive of The FA, said: “The number of grants approved over the past six months is testimony to our commitment to the pursuit of better grassroots football facilities in this country.

“Next year will see even greater intensity – continued investment in vital individual projects such as these and also the opening of the first city football hubs – marking a step-change in the nature of grassroots football provision.”

Nick Bitel, Sport England Chair, said: “Sports pitches and pavilions are used by millions of people each week, so it’s important that we make sure that they’re high quality, welcoming and accessible for everyone.

“We’re proud to be working with the FA, Premier League, Government and Football Foundation to create so many excellent facilities that benefit people now, and for years to come.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “This continued investment is improving the capacity and quality of local facilities for people who play their football, and other sports, purely for the love of it.

“Since we were launched in 2000, the Football Foundation has supported over 14,000 grassroots projects worth more than £1.3bn. By securing partnership funding the Foundation maximises the return on our Funding Partners’ investment. By targeting this investment into areas of greatest need and where it will have the greatest impact, we also maximise the impact of that investment.”

Data just released by Sport England as part of its Active People Survey (APS) shows a big jump in the number of people participating in open water swimming despite the widely-reported decline in general swimming numbers.

Overall, swimming is still the UK’s most popular participation sport with just over 2.5 million people regularly taking to the water but numbers have been falling steadily in recent years. The reasons for this decline are multi-faceted and complex and both Sport England and the national governing body for swimming, the Amateur Swimming Association, are working hard to address them.

One concern is that pool swimming is perceived as boring. Recent technology advances and a proliferation of tracking and sharing apps have helped boost other sports such as cycling and running, possibly at the expense of pool swimming.

However, according to specialist publication H2Open Magazine, open water swimming offers many of the attributes that these sports have and pool swimming lacks.

Open water swimming participation

“Open water swimming is exciting, adventurous, sociable and challenging,” says H2Open founder, Simon Griffiths. “The sport – or rather, activity – really does offer something for everyone. For the competitive, there are mass participation races; for the adventurous, there are long distance challenges and swimming tours; for endorphin junkies, there’s cold water swimming; and, for the sociable, there are now clubs and groups that meet around the country to swim, eat cake and chat. In addition, some of the tracking and route sharing technology used in cycling and running also works brilliantly in open water.”

The APS measures participation of at least 30 minutes, at least four times in the previous four weeks. The newly released data shows that 93,500 people participated in open water swimming, according to these criteria, between October 2014 and October 2015. This is the highest number recorded since the survey began in 2005.

“While these numbers are great news, we’d love to see even more people taking up open water swimming,” says Griffiths. “It’s good for both your mental and physical well-being and it’s a really open and welcoming community. We’d also love to see open water fully embraced by Sport England and the ASA as we believe it can be a catalyst for reversing the decline in pool swimming. When people start swimming outside they often also start going to swimming pools for training and practice.

“Finally, we’d also be delighted to welcome prospective open water swimmers to our Open Water Swimming Show at the Henley Mile on 10 July 2016. This year, for the first time, we’ll be hosting a special ‘Introduction to Open Water Swimming Experience’ for people who want to try out the sport. Alternatively, more experienced swimmers could tackle one of the day’s competitive events such as the ‘suits versus skins’ challenge.”

Former Arsenal midfielder Liam Brady was in Islington to open a £2.1m football facility made possible thanks to grants from Arsenal FC, via the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, and Islington Council.

The refurbished site at Market Road, just off Caledonian Road, now boasts two resurfaced full-size third generation (3G) artificial grass pitches (AGPs), three new small-sided 3G AGPs and a six-team changing room complex complete with shower facilities, two officials’ rooms, office space, meeting room and secure storage areas.

In addition to the five new pitches and changing pavilion, the site is now home to vastly improved spectator viewing facilities, including raised walkways between each pitch.

The site has achieved local notoriety as the forefront facility for grassroots football and hosts the two main leagues in the borough: the Islington Midweek League and the Camden & Islington Youth League.

Thousands of amateur footballers will use these new provisions every week, knowing that the future of two of the borough’s most popular leagues has been secured for at least the next decade. It is expected that the five-a-side pitches will act as a stepping stone for teams looking to play the 11v11 format of the game in those leagues.

Arsenal in the Community will run a number of weekly sessions at the newly refurbished facility, working with local school and community groups.

When an artificial pitch was first installed at Market Road in 1972, it was the first of its kind in the country and although the facility had received refurbishment in the preceding years, none were to the standard that has just been completed.

The previous pitches were functional but worn and the changing rooms were serviceable but unwelcoming, all of which meant that the site was unable to meet to the huge local demand for football.

Islington Council worked in partnership with the London FA to secure the £832,000 grant from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund.

The Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund is funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, via Sport England. It is delivered by the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 13,000 grants worth more than £530m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £740m – over £1.3bn of investment into the grassroots game.

Since 2000 the Football Foundation Funding Partners’ investment has provided 273 grants worth £26.5m towards grassroots sports projects worth over £65m across the whole of London.

By providing more high-quality facilities, coupled with coaching at the appropriate age group, the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund aims to improve the experience for regular players as well as attracting new players to the game.

Many of the new state-of-the-art facilities will serve to strengthen the connection between professional football clubs and their local communities, particularly in the most deprived areas of the country, through the professional clubs’ community trusts’ outreach work.

Liam Brady, former Arsenal player, Academy Manager and current Arsenal Foundation Ambassador, said: “Market Road’s football pitches have been a big part of the borough for over 40 years, since my playing days, so it’s great to come down here and see the centre is now home to fantastic new playing surfaces and changing rooms. Credit to the Premier League, The FA, Islington Council and the club for making it happen.

“Good facilities are so important for encouraging young players to get out and play the game, and it’s the sort of place that Arsenal has always scouted for our next generation of players too. You never know, Market Road could help develop the next Jack Wilshere or Kieran Gibbs.”

Cllr Janet Burgess, Islington Council’s Deputy Leader and executive member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “The council is committed to supporting all of our residents to live healthy, independent lives, and making the borough a fantastic place to live and work. Islington has one of the England’s highest rates for sport participation and it’s vital we keep that energy and momentum going.

“These improvement works will help make Market Road one of London’s finest football facilities, and give local people, of all ages, a better opportunity to practice and play together. The borough is already home to a world-class football club; new facilities like Market Road could help the next Jack Wilshere or Theo Walcott to develop their skills.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, added: “The Football Foundation is responsible for managing and delivering the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, which is funded by the Premier League, The FA and the Government, via Sport England. These five 3G pitches and changing rooms are an example of the positive impact that this funding is having on our grassroots game. First-class facilities like this are crucial to creating more opportunities for local people to enjoy regular sport. A special thanks to Liam Brady for taking time out to open this complex.

“Aided by the London FA, Islington Council and Arsenal FC, Market Road deserves huge credit for taking a vision and turning it into a reality, using funding provided by the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund. Sport has the power to make a positive impact on the health of communities and this wonderful new facility will improve the sporting experience of local people and encourage them to be more active.”
